This map is the result of one of my research methods during the residency at VHDG, focused on co-creating an alternative map of Leeuwarden through the perspectives of local activists.
During the research, I asked participants to identify places of action, solidarity, risk, and resistance. This helped uncover narratives rooted in Leeuwarden and explore how subjects are brought into the public domain through public space.
Big thanks to the co-creators for sharing your stories and your efforts.
Photos from the bike tour I organised last April together with climate activist Dirk Kuiken.
This was one of several tours based on the activist map we created during my residency at VHDG. Dirk took us on a powerful two-hour ride through Leeuwarden — a journey through fascinating, emotional, political, personal, and sometimes deeply disturbing locations and stories.
Not-so-fun fact: Thanks to Dirk, we learned that Leeuwarden hosts a drone squad called the REAPER, named after the combat drone they operate. Their emblem — disturbingly illustrative, leaves you wondering: what kind of world are they living in?
