Neighbours of Zero is a site-specific installation that playfully speculates on predestined futures of post-industrial architecture awaiting redevelopment, such as Het Hem. Well-fed with data, an algorithm bets on the future function of this property, in a game of probability and chance. The algorithm has been fed with 100 examples of highly detailed accounts of post-industrial buildings and the plans a developer has proposed for its future purposes. Based on the data, the algorithm is enabled to predict one of the potential futures for this building. Inspired by the odds and probabilities system of Roulette, the algorithm bets on the future of this former weapon factory in a game of luck. Neighbours of Zero plays with the language and vocabulary of developers, enabling new potential functions to blur and merge. Through creating these alternative futures, Het Hem is being reframed for ambiguous multi-use developments that manifest other creative or experimental potentials.
Installation consisting of LED displays, cables, algorithm, screen, fabric with digital print.
